What is Managed App Config?
Managed App Configurations can be deployed along with VPP apps on managed iOS and iPadOS devices. This allows admins to require use of certain settings or disable them entirely within the managed and deployed app.
In Addigy there are two paths to deploying a Managed App Configuration:
- Via GoLive per device with configured settings
- Via a device or group of devices enrolled Policy to push these apps and configurations en masse
Any saved Configuration will be the same (and will be available) for a given app, as long as it's under the same location via GoLive or via Policy based deployment.
These settings to be deployed are defined by the applications developer. It could be something as simple as a license key for an application to be activated or something more complex to change the settings or application behavior or lock down and application. Here is an example of settings for the Zoom app for iOS and iPadOS.
GoLive Managed App Configuration Deployment
This method of deployment is for quick one off installations.
- Navigate to the device you wish to deploy the App and Managed App Configuration to, and then the Software tab and Apple Apps tab.
- Select the location token that the app to be deployed exists in, and select the ellipsis under the action column in the row for the desired deployed application.
- If Deploy is selected the default action is to install the app only with no Configuration. If no Configuration value for the selected application exists already a new Configuration will need to be created via the Configuration option from the ellipsis under the action column in the row for the desired deployed application so that the App can be deployed with Configuration. A 3rd option does exist to deploy a Configuration over an already installed application of the device.
- To build the new Configuration select the Configuration option from the ellipsis under the action column in the row for the desired deployed application so that the App can be deployed with Configuration.
- In the Configuration Overview select Add Configuration.
- With the Key, Type, and Value options in the Configuration builder add the desired values. Here is an example of settings for the Zoom app for iOS and iPadOS. When done adding the desired values select Save.
- After you have added and saved the configurations for the Application they will be listed out, and the Configuration Overview select can be closed.
- With the Configuration now added to the desired application it can be deployed with Configuration.
Policy Managed App Configuration Deployment
This method of deployment is for automated group installations. It uses the same configurations saved to the desired application as GoLive deployment so configurations can be shared or re-used if needed.
- Navigate to the desired Policy you wish to deploy the App and Managed App Configuration to, and then the Software tab and Apple Apps tab. Here you will see all the Apps and Books in the assigned token. In the last column on the left for Configuration you will see a link and grey or green dot. The green dot signifies an applied Configuration if none exist it will be grey as in this example.
- To add a Configuration select the Configuration option. This will show the Configuration Overview and allow you to select Add Configuration (steps are the same as the GoLive example above) if none exists or if the App has previously had a configuration saved those will be available to add via the Assign button.
- Once the Configuration has been Assigned the Apps listing in the policy will show the green dot signifying that the App has an assigned Configuration.
- With the desired Configuration set you can add the App to the Policy in question. From that point on any device in the Policy will get that assigned Configuration deployed to it when requested (if app is not currently installed at check in/audit.
After the app is added:
Troubleshoot and Remove Configurations
If a Configuration needs to be removed from a device you can navigate to the Configuration Overview via the device's Software tab and Apple Apps tab, and then the desired App. If the keys and Configuration are removed and the Configuration Only is deployed to the device and the app in question is closed and re-opened after the deployment the App will revert to defaults.
