Cloning an existing Smart Software item lets you quickly create a copy to reuse as a starting point — useful when you need a variation of something you've already built, like a version for a specific team or with a slightly different configuration.
Note: Policy restrictions are not carried over when cloning. You'll need to set those on the new item after saving.
How to Clone a Smart Software Item
- Navigate to Catalog > Software > Smart Software.
- Find the item you want to clone and click its ... (Actions) menu.
- Select Clone.
- Update any fields you want to change — such as the name or version — then click Save.
The cloned item will appear alongside the original in your Smart Software list (it will be titled "[Original Name] COPY").
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the clone inherit the original's policy restrictions?
No. Policy restrictions are not copied over. After saving the new item, you can set restrictions via its ... menu under Policies > Restrictions.
Can I change the name of the cloned item?
Yes — this should be done before saving, since the software name cannot be changed after the item is created.
Will the files and installation command be copied over?
Yes. The clone includes all configurations from the original, including files, installation commands, and other settings. Only policy restrictions are excluded.
