Releasing Apple Apps licenses will dissociate an application on a device with a license that was given from the associated Apple Business/School Manager account.
How to Release Licenses
To release a license, navigate to Policies > policy where Apple Apps is configured > Integrations & Settings > Apple Apps:
In the Apple Apps tab, you will see a table of all the applications with licenses in your Apple Business/School Manager account. This table provides insightful information such as how many licenses are on the account in total, assigned, and available.
By clicking on the Assigned number for a particular application, you will see the licenses associated with the device serial numbers of the devices in the policy. By clicking release, the license associated with that device serial number will no longer be associated with that device and will then become available for use by other devices:
Expected Behavior
When an Apple App license is released from a device, the application will remain installed for 30 days. As per Apple, 30 days after the license is released, the app will become greyed out and unusable on the device. This will occur when:
- an Apple App is unassigned from a policy.
- a device is removed from a policy Apple Apps are being deployed from.
When a device is completely removed from Addigy (unenrolled from MDM management), licenses will be released and Apple Apps will be uninstalled immediately.
Note: The behavior described above is expected when the Apple App Uninstall feature is disabled (default behavior).
Apple App Uninstall
To enable the Apple App Uninstall feature for your organization's environment, navigate to Account > Integrations and enable Apple App Uninstall in the Addigy Add-Ons section.
With the feature enabled, Apple Apps are automatically uninstalled from devices in the following scenarios:
- When an app license is released for a device.
- When an Apple App is unassigned from a policy.
- When a device is removed from a policy Apple Apps are being deployed from.
- When a device is completely removed from Addigy (unenrolled from MDM management).
Note:
- If the device is in multiple policies and the same app is assigned to more than one of those policies, the app will not be removed as more than one app assignment for the device record exists.
- There is a 30 minute grace period on device side app removal if the VPP token was just renewed.
- If you find that Apple Apps have been uninstalled from devices without being triggered to do so, ensure your VPP token is not in use in another MDM server (or was not previously used in another MDM server). If it is, create a new VPP token for sole use in Addigy.
