Prebuilt Apps are the easiest and most efficient way to manage macOS Application lifecycles in Addigy, with an easy-to-search catalog of the most popular applications and a set-it-and-forget-it style of deployment. You can configure exact versions of an application to deploy or have it set to auto-update. Prebuilt Apps include all the MDM profiles required by each software title and give granular management of deployment schedules — all at the click of a button.
This overview guide will show you how to use Prebuilt Apps from the policy itself.
Adding Prebuilt Apps from the Policy View
To Add a Prebuilt App to a policy go to the policy > Software > Prebuilt Apps:
-
Select the checkbox for the application(s) that need to be added to the policy
-
Click the Add/Remove box in the upper left > Add to Policy
- Configure the application(s) settings in the pop up modal
Targeted Version vs Latest and Auto Update
With Prebuilt Apps, you can choose to push a specific application version or have the policy always deploy the latest application version. The most up-to-date application is labeled as the Latest.
If you choose a specific app version, you will need to come back to choose a different target version when you want a new version of the app to be deployed.
If you wish for a more set-it-and-forget-it experience, you can choose Latest and Auto Update. This will always deploy the latest application version to devices in the policy.
Update Only
This setting enables Addigy to update applications on a device, but it will not enforce the presence of the app on devices. Devices in this policy that have the application installed will update according to the settings configured in Prebuilt Apps, but Addigy will not install the application on devices. This setting assumes the application is in the default application location, and the installation method of the application is not taken into account.
You can toggle the Update Only setting for relevant policies, all within the Settings window of the Prebuilt App:
Enforce Update
This setting allows you to set a deadline for when the app will be forced to update to the latest version. This ranges from the next deployment to 14 days. This can be set on a per-app basis.
The Set all to enforce update dropdown will allow you to set the same day across all policies.
Note: If this setting is set for 10 days, and the end user takes a 14-day vacation, the next time that machine powers on, the application will be forced to update
Update Schedule
An update schedule can be set by clicking the Settings button in the upper right corner.
Select the Restrict update schedule to configure the specific days and times for the installation and updates. If there are machines across multiple time zones, we recommend using the device's local time; otherwise, it will default to the time zone of the Addigy admin’s browser that is configuring the settings.
Days for auto update to be delayed by allows admins to choose how many days before the latest version is updated on the policy for apps that are set to ‘Latest and Auto Update.’
How often to prompt end-user to close app when enforcing updates- when an application is open and an update is available, admins can decide how often to prompt the end user to close the app and update it.
Overriding Prebuilt App Values
Overriding Deployment Schedules
Prebuilt Apps deployment schedules are inherited down to child policies, but Prebuilt Apps introduces the idea of inheritance override. A different schedule than the parents' can be configured in the deployment schedules. This overridden setting will become the new parent for the child policies for inheritance.
Overriding Prebuilt App configurations
Prebuilt Apps assigned to a policy are inherited down to child policies but Prebuilt Apps has the unique ability to override these configurations. A different application configuration can be configured in the child policies. When an application overrides the parent, the briefcase icon will be crossed out. This override will become the new parent for any children beneath that.
Prebuilt Apps policy overview
Admins can see what they have configured in the Prebuilt Apps policy at a glance. They can filter and search at the top of the Prebuilt Apps view. The Version column shows what settings are applied to apps. Apps that are configured display the app version. If they are set to auto-update, the version being deployed in the policy is in parentheses next to Auto Update.
If the policy has a deployment window enabled, it is shown in the upper right corner, along with details on whether it is set to device local time or not.
Viewing/modifying app details and configurations
To view or modify application configurations, click on the application name and a dropdown will appear with two options. App Details and Update Configuration if it is assigned to the policy or Assign to Policy if it is not.
App Details will open up a modal that has information about the application itself, the installation and condition script, and the attached MDM profiles, if relevant. It also has information about the MD5 hash of the .pkg being deployed to the device and when it was published in the Addigy Prebuilt Apps catalog.
Update Configuration will appear if the application is already assigned to the policy. Otherwise, it will say Assign to policy. This will open up the modal to configure the application settings, including the version being deployed, update only, and number of deferrals.
