Local Login: Major UI Relocation & Clarity Improvements
Identity v2
In Identity v2, local login was accessed from an icon in the top-right corner of the screen. This layout worked for many environments, but the placement wasn’t always obvious to new users.
Local login is now accessed from the Options button beneath the WebView. When local login is enabled in configuration, a dedicated Local User Login tab appears in the sidebar, keeping login-related actions in a consistent, easy-to-find location.
Local Login List: Better Multi-User Presentation
Identity v2
When multiple local users were configured, Identity v2 expanded the list within the existing interface. This allowed selection across several accounts but could feel dense on devices with many local users.
New Identity v3
Identity v3 presents local users in a cleaner, scrollable list so that all available accounts are clearly visible during login. On shared or multi-user devices, the list can grow while remaining easy to scan and select from.
Password Attempts & Account Lock Warning
Identity v2
Identity v2 followed the configured password policies, but the login screen did not always show upcoming lockout thresholds directly to users. Support teams sometimes had to clarify what had happened after a lockout occurred.
New Identity v3
Identity v3 checks password policies on every login attempt and displays clear, proactive messages when users are approaching lockout. This added transparency helps reduce confusion and can lower the number of password-related support tickets.
Backup Login & Options Menu
Identity v2
In Identity v2, network settings, reverting to macOS login, and power-down options were accessed from an icon in the top-right corner. This kept the UI compact, but some users didn’t immediately recognize that the icon exposed additional options.
New Identity v3
In Identity v3, these controls have been moved under the Options button beneath the WebView. A dedicated tab clearly offers the ability to revert to the macOS native login, making it easier for technicians and users to find fallback paths when needed.
Power Down Options
Identity v2
Power options such as restart and shutdown were available but visually subtle, located behind small icons in the corner of the interface.
New Identity v3
Identity v3 presents shutdown and restart options prominently at the center below the WebView. This layout supports easier discovery during troubleshooting and guided support scenarios.
Account Sync Experience
Identity v2
After signing in with account sync enabled, users saw a popup explaining how accounts would be linked. While functional, the layout sometimes led to questions about examples and wording.
New Identity v3
The account sync flow has been refreshed to feel more native to macOS. Updated language and layout make it clearer how user accounts will be synchronized, improving confidence for both admins and end users.
Network Scan & Network List
Identity v2
In Identity v2, scanning for networks was initiated from an icon and surfaced selected nearby Wi-Fi networks. Ethernet and some public network scenarios were handled separately.
New Identity v3
Identity v3 introduces a dedicated Network page under the Options button. This page shows both Wi-Fi networks and indicates when an Ethernet cable is connected, consolidating connectivity information into one central, easy-to-understand location.
Wi-Fi Selection & Password Entry
New Identity v3
When a user selects a Wi-Fi network in Identity v3, a dedicated page now clearly prompts them to enter the network password. This step-by-step flow streamlines the process and removes ambiguity about what to do next.
Open Network Handling
Identity v2
In some environments, open networks did not appear in the scan list, even when users could see them on other devices. This could lead to questions about why a particular network was not shown.
New Identity v3
Identity v3 now shows open networks in the list. When connection to these networks is not supported, clear error messages explain the behavior. This helps set expectations and reduces confusion when users compare their Mac to another device on the same location.
